Kettle Moraine State Forest—Northern Unit is 7 mi. e. on SR 67. Visitors can take a self-guiding automobile tour to view such geological formations as eskers, kames and kettles, created by glaciers more than 20,000 years ago. Henry Reuss Ice Age Visitor Center provides information about the forest's geological history. Recreational activities include boating, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
Visitor center free. Park $11 (per out-of-state private vehicle); $8 (per in-state private vehicle); $4 (per in-state private vehicle with resident senior age 65+). Annual permit $38 (per out-of-state private vehicle); $28 (per in-state private vehicle); $13 (per in-state private vehicle with resident senior age 65+). Trail fee additional $5 (horseback riding, mountain biking or skiing).
Hours: Park daily 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Visitor center Mon.-Fri. 8:30-4, Sat.-Sun. 9:30-5, Apr.-Nov.; hours vary rest of year. Mauthe Lake and Long Lake recreation areas open daily 6 a.m.-11 p.m. (staffed 10-7).
