Basilica at Holy Hill is w. on SR 167 to 1525 Carmel Rd. The Basilica of the National Shrine to Mary, Help of Christians, is staffed by Discalced Carmelites. Settlers erected a 15-foot oak cross and chapel on the 1,350-foot summit in the early 19th century. The log chapel evolved into a Romanesque church, a national shrine to the Virgin Mary and a monastery for the friars who staff the shrine. A tower affords picturesque views.
