Olbrich Botanical Gardens is at 3330 Atwood Ave. This oasis on the shores of Lake Monona includes 16 acres of specialty gardens, a 50-foot-high glass conservatory and what is said to be the only Thai pavilion and garden in the continental United States. A two-acre rose garden features hardy shrub roses in mixed borders with fountains and a two-story stone tower overlook. Other gardens display herbs, hostas, perennials, wildflowers and annuals. The conservatory simulates a rain-forest atmosphere and contains tropical plants, bamboo arbors, a waterfall, palm trees and free-flying birds. Flower shows, concerts and special events are offered throughout the year. Guided tours are available by appointment. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Outdoor gardens and Thai pavilion admission free. Conservatory $2; free (ages 0-5 and to all Wed. and Sat. 10-noon except during special exhibits). Rates may vary; phone ahead.
Hours: Outdoor gardens open daily 8-8, Apr.-Sept.; 9-6 in Oct.; 9-4, rest of year. Conservatory open Mon.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. 10-5. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
