University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum Visitor Center is near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus at 1207 Seminole Hwy. Covering 1,200 acres along Lake Wingra and south of the West Beltline Highway, the arboretum acts as a research and study area and features natural plant and animal communities native to Wisconsin. The Longenecker Horticultural Gardens includes flowering trees, shrubs and a renowned lilac collection. Surrounding the visitor center, the 4-acre Wisconsin Native Plant Gardens feature a collection of nearly 500 native Wisconsin plant species and serve as an introduction to ecological restoration. Bimonthly exhibits at the Steinhauer Trust Art Gallery feature nature-themed art and photography. Free naturalist-led tours are offered on Sundays. Pets and picnicking are not permitted. Guided tours are available.
Hours: Grounds daily 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Visitor center Mon.-Fri. 9:30-4, Sat.-Sun. 12:30-4. Closed major holidays.
