AAA Editor Notes
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park departs from the downtown depot at 242 Main St. Passenger trains make several runs with the old steam Shay and Heisler locomotives that once hauled logging trains up the steep slopes of Cheat Mountain.

The rail excursions, which offer scenic mountain vistas, include an 8-mile, 2-hour round-trip to Whittaker Station and a 22-mile, 4.5-hour round-trip excursion to the top of Bald Knob. Other trips, including dinner trains, caboose rides and overnight packages with train rides to Old Spruce and Elkins also are available. Trips are preceded by a free show that includes a diorama and audiovisual orientation film that relate the town's lumbering history.

The Cass Historical Museum houses a collection of photographs and relics pertaining to the logging industry, including one of the largest band saws in the world. The Cass Showcase is a historic diorama depicting the Cass Railroad in its lumbering days and includes a reproduction of the town during the lumber boom at the beginning of the 19th century.

Note: Layered clothing is recommended on rail excursions due to cooler temperatures at higher elevations.

Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
