AAA Editor Notes
Lost World Caverns is 1.5 mi. n. via Court St. to 907 Lost World Dr. The caves were discovered in 1942 by speleologists from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. They contain a number of large rooms with stalactite, stalagmite and flowstone formations as well as impressive displays of pure calcite. Visitors descend about 100 feet below the entrance point and explore at their own pace by taking a self-guiding, half-mile loop trail through the caverns.

Some of the formations encountered include the Bridal Veil, a dazzling display of white calcite; the Snowy Chandelier, one of the largest stalactites in the United States at a whopping 30 tons; and the War Club, a 28-foot stalagmite. A subterranean stream and stalagmites jutting upward from the cave floor add to the mystique and beauty of this underground world. While the caverns' temperature is a constant 52 F, visitors can warm up in the facility's onsite museum, featuring an assortment of fossil and dinosaur replicas.

Note: Guided Wild Cave tours take four hours; full mobility is recommended. Warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended on all tours.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
