AAA Editor Notes
West Virginia Penitentiary is at 818 Jefferson Ave. This Gothic-style fortress was built by inmate labor in 1868 and was the state's first territorial prison. Guided 90-minute tours allow visitors to step inside a 5-foot-by-7-foot cell and see the electric chair, the gallows and North Hall, where the worst inmates were confined 23 hours a day. Hand-painted murals, created by inmates, adorn the walls. Nighttime paranormal tours also are available; phone ahead to confirm schedule and prices.
