National Elk Refuge is 1 mi. e. on Broadway to Elk Refuge Rd. The 24,700-acre refuge is the winter home of 7,500 elk, one of the largest herds in North America. Elk can be seen November through April; during the summer they migrate to mountain meadows in Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks and Bridger-Teton National Forest. The habitat also attracts other wildlife, including bald eagles, bighorn sheep, bison, trumpeter swans and wolves.
The visitor center at 532 N. Cache St. offers exhibits and wildlife videos.
