AAA Editor Notes
South Pass City State Historic Site encompasses the entire town; turn off SR 28 at Milepost 43 and follow signs. This ghostly reminder of South Pass City's mining era is being restored. Thirty-one log, frame and stone structures—including the Carissa Saloon, the South Pass Hotel, a jail, a livery stable, mill and a butcher shop—remain on 200 acres of land. A visitor center has interpretive displays depicting the town's past. Living-history programs also are offered. The site has a historic nature trail.
Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
