Alexander Keith's Brewery

1496 Lower Water Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia

One of the oldest breweries in Canada, Alexander Keith’s Halifax brewery still operates from its original location, which dates back to 1820. A visit here will show you how the company’s popular beers are made—and give you the chance to have a taste.

The experience at Alexander Keith’s starts with a brewery tour through the 200-year-old ironstone buildings. See how the brewing process has changed over the years, then head to the in-house tavern to taste your favorites. The energetic tour guides give visitors a flavor of 19th-century Halifax, complete with traditional songs and pub games. If you don’t want to take the tour, head straight to the Red Flag tavern next door to try the beer.

You’ll also learn more about Alexander Keith himself. Born in Scotland, like many others he emigrated to Nova Scotia for the chance at a better life. A local hero, he not only opened the now-famous brewery but was a local politician too, and served as mayor of Halifax three times.

  • Entry to the brewery tour is by paid ticket.

  • The tour passes through old buildings with steps, and may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

  • There’s an on-site gift shop.

Alexander Keith’s brewery is located at 1496 Lower Water Street, along the main Halifax waterfront. It's walking distance from attractions including the farmers market and the Maritime Museum, and the main VIA rail station is a 15-minute walk away. There’s also a paid parking lot about a 5-minute walk away.

Brewery tours are available throughout the year and make a great rainy-day activity. Plan on booking in advance if you can, as the tour is usually busy.

To learn more about the history of Halifax, head to the citadel in the city center, a National Historic Site. Here, you’ll find actors in historical dress—bringing to life the 78th Highlanders and the Royal Artillery regiments that were stationed here. Watch the demonstrations and tour the barracks, tailor shop, engineer store, garrison cells, and more.
