Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area

Address not available, Williamsburg, VA, 23187

Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area is off I-64 exit 238, following signs. This 301-acre interactive living-history museum re-creates the spirit and culture of everyday life in the 18th-century capital of Virginia. Engaging educational programming focusing on guest interaction is introduced seasonally. After 1780, when Richmond became Virginia’s capital, Williamsburg reverted to the status of a quiet college town. Fearing that many of its historic buildings would be lost, a local minister, the Rev. W.A.R. Goodwin, persuaded John D. Rockefeller Jr. to finance the restoration of the Colonial town. In 1926 the two men embarked on an ambitious project with architects, archeologists and historians to preserve some 70 structures. Colonial Williamsburg is a step back in time to the 18th century, where costumed interpreters—tradespeople, housewives, enslaved people, freemen, governmental officials and soldiers—go about their everyday duties. Many of the buildings can be visited on self-guiding tours, while others are open for guided tours only. Live outdoor theater experiences are offered daily re-creating the struggle for American independence 1774-81. The program focuses on the collapse of the royal government and the Colonies at war. Events take place throughout the historic area; hours vary seasonally. Leashed pets are permitted in some outdoor areas. Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Food is available.
