Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site, 10 mi. n. to 5556 US 17N, provides a glimpse of early 19th-century life on the Georgia rice coast as well as a chance to observe the vegetation and animal life native to this freshwater marsh country. In 1806 William Brailsford purchased a tract of land and named it Broadfield. Later generations built the present house, which they named Hofwyl, in the 1850s. The estate remained in the family until 1973. The plantation is presently a 1,268-acre nature preserve with a museum where an orientation video introduces visitors to the site and a film presentation details the history of Hofwyl and the rice industry. Exhibits show how enslaved laborers, many of them experienced in rice cultivation in Africa, carved a rice plantation from the virgin cypress swamp along the Altamaha River. The house has family furnishings from different periods. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
