Kenmore Plantation & Gardens, 1201 Washington Ave., once belonged to Col. Fielding Lewis and his wife, Betty Washington Lewis, sister of George Washington. Wheat and corn were the major crops cultivated by enslaved workers. Built in 1775, the home is an example of a Georgian manor house. Used as a hospital during the Civil War, the building is noteworthy for the elaborate, decorative plasterwork on its ceilings and over its fireplaces. The Bissell Gallery features an exhibit about the lives of Fielding and Betty Lewis as well as a diorama of Fredericksburg in the late 1700s. There also is an interactive portion of the exhibit for children. The grounds include a wilderness walking trail. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
