Louisiana State Capitol

900 N. Third St., Baton Rouge, LA, 70802

Louisiana State Capitol is at 900 N. Third St. The 34-story-high building is said to be the nation's tallest state capitol. Flanking the front steps are the statues “The Patriots” and “The Pioneers” by Lorado Taft. Some 26 varieties of marble adorn the interior. Statuary, murals and a polished lava floor are inside Memorial Hall, which opens to the House and Senate chambers. Also on the first floor is a state visitor information center. Long, who spearheaded construction of the Capitol as governor of Louisiana, was assassinated in its corridors in 1935. A bullet hole can still be seen in one of the building's walls.
