National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is at 339 S. Seton Ave. Mother Seton was the founder of the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's and a pioneer in Catholic education in the early 1880s. She was canonized in 1975, the first native-born American to be so honored. Her remains are buried beneath her altar in the basilica. A visitor center contains a museum and shows a 12-minute video depicting Seton's life and times. Two historic houses, a cemetery and a mortuary chapel can be seen. Educational programs and special events are offered. Guided tours of the historic houses are available. A Civil War history tour also is available by advance reservation. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
