Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

US 64, Taos, NM, 87571

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is 10 mi. w. of Taos on US 64. Built in 1965, this continuous steel deck truss bridge is 1,272 feet long and spans the gorge some 650 feet above the Rio Grande. A raised sidewalk allows daredevils to walk out to the mid-span observation deck for a dizzying look down—the gorge is spectacularly deep at this point—with rugged cliff walls zigzagging to the water far below. If you suffer from acrophobia even hanging on to the guardrail for dear life won't be enough, but the views still are spectacular (and not as vertigo-inducing) from the side of the highway. There are parking areas on both sides of the highway at the east end of the bridge, and vendors set up tables to sell jewelry, T-shirts and other items. The 20-minute drive from Taos is a scenic one, running through a flat, sagebrush-speckled valley framed by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east and the San Juan range to the northwest.
