Scotty's Castle is 25 mi. s.w. of US 95 on SR 267 at the valley's n. boundary. An amazing sight in this isolated region, the vacation retreat was built in the 1920s by a wealthy Chicagoan. The house contains beautiful furnishings and art and is decorated as it would have appeared in 1939. Rangers in period garb conduct the 1-hour House Tour. The 1-hour Underground Tour explores the basement and tunnels and focuses on the technology used to build and live in this remote mansion. Note: Scotty’s Castle is closed due to flood damage. Limited Flood Recovery Walking Tours may be available; phone ahead for details. In peak season, November through April, wait times may be up to 2 hours, so visitors should buy tour tickets when they arrive or make advance reservations. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
