Homestead, which lies in the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area in southwestern Pennsylvania, was the setting for a labor strike that held national interest in 1892. The Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers held out against Carnegie Steel Co. from June 29-Nov. 21 despite the arrival of 300 Pinkerton guards by barge on July 6; 12 men lost their lives in the confrontation between the guards and the laborers, families and supporters. In the end the strikers lost. Visitors can still see remnants of the steel era like the pump house and smokestacks, but the main draw now is the Monongahela River waterfront's shopping and entertainment. Learn More...
