Marysville was named for Mary Murphy Covillaud, an early settler and Donner Party survivor. Central to Marysville is Ellis Lake, named for W.T. Ellis, a prosperous town merchant in the early 1900s. John McLaren, the designer of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, converted a swampy area into this popular recreational outlet.
