An industrial community and the former site of a Miami Indian village, Peru is best known as the former home base of the various traveling circuses that crisscrossed the country. Troupes including the well-known Hagenback-Wallace circus wintered in the area as early as the 1800s, and for many years the city's economy focused on the circus.
