Potsdam was settled in 1803 by land agent Benjamin Raymond. Five years later a post office opened to serve a thriving community of more than 900. The Clarkson family ran a farm and a variety of businesses, built Trinity Church and founded the Thomas Clarkson Memorial College of Technology, now known as Clarkson University.
