SCENIC BYWAY

Indiana's Scenic Backcountry Route 135

49.5 miles: 1 hours, 10 minutes

From historic downtown Salem, SR 135 takes you north through Hoosier National Forest and the rich farm lands of southern Indiana. The route winds along the eastern edge of the nearly 16,000-acre Brown County State Park, whose rugged hills, known as the “Little Smokies,” offer scenic vistas and excellent fall foliage viewing.

Begin in the Salem Downtown Historic District, where a cannon on the courthouse grounds memorializes an 1863 Calvary raid on the town. SR 135 north will take you on a pleasant drive through the Hoosier National Forest and the green pastures and golden corn fields of rural Indiana to the "Little Smokies" region of Brown County State Park.
