Five Tips to Make Your Holidays Safer
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recommends these five tips for staying safe on the road this holiday season:
- Offer to be the designated driver. No one should ever drink and drive. You can keep your family and friends safer by making yourself the non-drinking designated driver.
- Drive with extra attention. Holiday parties, bad weather, and short days all create additional hazards on the road, so stay focused. Limit heavy conversations with passengers, avoid cell phone use, and keep a calm, relaxed atmosphere in your car.
- Forget about the annoyances. If someone steals your parking space, cuts you off, tries to pass, or acts aggressively toward you, just go on your merry way.
- Stay alert in parking lots. Watch for cars suddenly pulling out, distracted pedestrians carrying packages, and children running around without looking. Park in well-lighted areas, avoid walking alone at night, and have your keys in your hand before you leave a store.
- Keep an eye on the weather. December marks the beginning of winter, so have your car ready. Make sure you have sand or salt, a shovel, blankets, water, food, flares, and a cell phone for emergencies.
