Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago in the AAA Green Car Guide, which initially focused entirely on rating fuel-efficient, low-emitting vehicles.

For the 2021 edition, we've expanded the focus of the guide to include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and the development of autonomous vehicles.

Test Results and Rankings:
The green cars tested by the ARC are evaluated on the basis of 13 categories: emissions, fuel economy, crashworthiness, braking, acceleration, handling, cargo-carrying capacity, ride quality, interior noise, ease of entry and exit, maneuverability, roominess, and visibility. The scores for the categories are totaled, and the cars are ranked from high to low.

Overall Observations
Based on the well-known Wrangler, the Jeep Gladiator Overland 4x4 - Jeep's first pickup in more than a quarter of a century - is a new-for-2020 model that essentially adds an extended wheelbase and installs a 5-foot cargo bed in place of a typical enclosed cargo area. There's plenty of interior headroom and legroom in the Gladiator, as well as ample cargo room in the bed. However, visibility is poor to the rear and sides, and getting in and out is hard (especially for rear passengers) because of the small door openings and running boards that are difficult to use. The Gladiator is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which provide sufficient power and towing capacity. Useful and unique features include LED headlights, removable roof and doors, and a highly rated Uconnect infotainment system that looks good and is easy to use. The Gladiator maintains Jeep's can-do reputation with strong off-road capabilities and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. There are some notable downsides, however: dismal fuel economy (17 mpg city/22 mpg highway/19 mpg combined), severe wind and road noise, vague steering, and a rough ride on pavement.
