Overall Observations
The Chevrolet Suburban is a marque that’s been around seemingly
forever. It debuted in 1935 and, more than 8 decades later, this full-size
SUV remains an automotive classic. That said, by any measure it’s a bit
of a dinosaur as well, with its gargantuan dimensions, pickup-truckbased
construction, and thirsty powertrains.
But the all-new 12th-generation, which debuted in 2021, has
evolved, getting an independent rear suspension, which provides a
more supple ride quality, plus added room for rear-seat passengers,
especially those in the third row. Under the hood, our test truck was
equipped with the available 6.2-liter gasoline-powered V8, which
provides both a hefty 8,300-pound towing capacity and dismal fuel
economy. Buyers looking to do a lot of driving or towing would do
well to check out the new and notably more fuel-efficient 3.0-liter
turbodiesel inline 6-cylinder option, which puts out 277 hp and gets
23 mpg in combined driving rear-wheel drive.
Our top-of-the line tester came with a long list of high-tech
features, including an optional rear-seat entertainment system
with huge 12.6-inch dual screens and a 360-degree surround-view
monitor—a welcome addition when trying to maneuver this beast
in tight quarters. Unfortunately, most advanced safety features are
optional.
