Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2022 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

Reliably, the Chevrolet Tahoe remains what it’s always been: a full-size truck-based SUV that can haul lots of passengers and cargo down the road in comfort. But that doesn’t mean the new-for-2021 Tahoe hasn’t changed. For one, it now has an independent rear suspension that improves ride quality and opens up additional interior space. The quiet 8-passenger cabin is roomier all around, especially in the second-row seats, which slide fore and aft, and in the third row’s additional 10 inches of legroom. Cargo room also is up, to 123 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. Handling is reasonably responsive, especially for a vehicle this big. Under the hood, our tester’s Premier trim level featured the standard 5.3-liter V8 engine (355 hp), which provides solid acceleration and a healthy 8,400 pounds of towing capacity, but only an estimated 18 mpg in combined city/highway driving. A 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp) and 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline 6-cylinder engines are options - both provide towing muscle and the turbodiesel provides better fuel efficiency. A host of useful technology, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, helps keep this big, old-school SUV relevant today.
