Overall Observations
The reintroduced retro-styled Bronco, which revives one of Ford’s
iconic monikers, is the company’s long-anticipated rugged off-roader.
It’s available as a 2- or 4-door, with 2 engine options and 7 trim levels.
Our Black Diamond - trim tester came with the standard 2.3-liter
turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (275 hp) and optional 10-speed
automatic transmission (a 7-speed manual is standard).
The Bronco has multiple drive modes for all kinds of terrain, and
its off-road capabilities are impressive. The cabin features good front
headroom, legroom, and all-around visibility, especially with the doors
and roof panels removed. LED headlights with auto high beams is
a standard feature, as is automatic emergency braking and forwardcollision
warning. But other advanced safety features are available only
on higher-level options packages.
Like the Jeep Wrangler, the Bronco is well-suited to off-road forays.
But it also has numerous shortcomings, especially noticeable on
pavement: high levels of interior noise, a harsh-shifting transmission,
difficult entry and exit, tight rear seating, questionable overall build
quality, substandard interior fit and finish, and dismal fuel-economy
ratings (18 mpg combined).
