Overall Observations
The Ford F-Series pickup is America’s perennially
best-selling vehicle; the automaker sells 800,000
to 900,000 a year. Completely redesigned for 2021,
the F-150 could be a brand unto itself: It comes in 8
trim levels, 6 powertrains, and 3 cab configurations
and bed lengths.
Indeed, the F-150 can be everything from an unadorned work
truck to a high-end hauler of people and stuff equipped with the latest
luxury features and tech.
Our test vehicle came with a powerful 5.0-liter V8 (400 hp), a
10-speed automatic, Ford’s Co-Pilot360 2.0 suite of advanced safety
features, a power liftgate and running boards, bed-view camera, trailertow
package, and onboard electric generator. The roomy interior is
nicely laid out, with quality materials and excellent fit and finish.
All this capability comes with costs and tradeoffs. The upscale King
Ranch trim starts at $56,000, nearly twice the cost of the base XL. The
standard V8 guzzles fuel (19 mpg combined), has mediocre handling
and a bumpy ride, and is hard to maneuver because of its large
turning radius.
