Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2022 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The newly redesigned Hyundai Elantra compact sedan features sharp styling, such as an aggressive grille and low-profile LED headlights, which gives the car a bold, sporty look. And as is the case with many Hyundai products, the Elantra offers good value—that is, lots of desirable features at a competitive price. Hyundai gave the Elantra a hybrid powertrain for 2021. It combines a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor (139 hp total). The ride is comfortable, but the powertrain is noisy in gaselectric transitions and the brakes can be touchy. EPA fuel-economy numbers, at 50 mpg in combined driving, are excellent. The Elantra Hybrid has a roomy interior, although the low roofline can make getting in and out tricky for taller passengers. We found the infotainment system unintuitive and difficult to use, and the high rear deck limits visibility. The trunk’s 14 cubic feet of cargo room can be expanded by way of 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks. Additional pluses include a long list of standard advanced safety features and Hyundai’s 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
