Overall Observations
In the automotive world, there are 7-passenger SUVs and there are
those designed for off-the-pavement adventuring. For folks who’d like
a bit of both, there’s the new-for-2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.
Aesthetically, this handsome midsize crossover isn’t your typical
family hauler, although it has plenty of headroom and legroom for
6 people with the standard second-row captain chairs or 7 with the
available bench seat. Power comes from a 3.6-liter V6 (293 hp) that
gives the L a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds (a 357-hp V8 is an
option). The ride is comfortable, there’s a choice of 4-wheel-drive
systems, and an available air suspension increases ground clearance.
Unfortunately, the powertrain can feel a bit clunky, and fuel-economy
ratings are lacking (21 mpg in combined driving).
The Grand Cherokee L can be had in more affordable entry-level
models, but it’s in the higher trims where it shines. Our Limited-trim
tester featured LED headlights and a host of standard advanced safety
features, plus options such as Jeep’s intuitive Uconnect 5 infotainment/
navigation system, a surround-view camera, and an oversize
panoramic sunroof, among many others on offer.
