Overall Observations
Completely redesigned for 2021, the secondgeneration
Mirai is much more stylish and
functional—and about $9,000 cheaper—than the
outgoing version. Under the skin, it’s a zero-emission
EV powered by a single electric motor (182 hp) and
compressed hydrogen stored in onboard tanks.
The Mirai has a solid feel, quick acceleration, and a smooth,
comfortable ride that cushions occupants from pavement
imperfections. The range between fill-ups—also increased—is between
350 and 400 miles, depending on the trim level.
Rear-wheel drive, a full complement of advanced safety features,
LED headlights with auto high beams, and 3 drive modes are
standard. The Mirai is also eligible for a federal tax credit and comes
with 6 years/$15,000 of free fuel.
Which brings up the Mirai’s (significant) downside: the absence of
a robust hydrogen-fueling infrastructure. Virtually all hydrogen filling
stations (about 50) are in California and Honolulu, the only places the
Mirai is available. So Mirai owners have to plan their travels carefully,
and out-of-state travel is effectively impossible
