Overall Observations
Minivans don’t get the love and respect they did back in the early
2000s. But the Toyota Sienna Hybrid, redesigned for 2021, continues
to thrive as a well-recognized staple in the minivan segment.
The redesigned Sienna’s most outstanding feature is the fact that
it’s available only as a hybrid (woohoo!). There’s a downside, though:
The hybrid powertrain produces just 245 hp, compared with the 296
hp of the previous edition’s V6. That makes the Sienna Hybrid feel
much slower - and the powertrain is noisy as well. But the gas-electric
powertrain achieves an EPA-estimated 36 mpg in combined driving,
compared with just 21 mpg for the previous generation - that’s huge.
The Sienna delivers a smooth, comfortable ride for 7 to 8 people
and their gear, although maneuvering a vehicle this big takes some
practice. Our base model LE tester lacked some niceties we’d have
liked - such as heated and cooled front seats and a power liftgate.
However, LED headlights, 3-row automatic climate control, and
Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 suite of advanced safety features are
standard issue
