Overall Observations
Completely redesigned for 2022 after taking the 2021 model year
off, Audi’s A3 compact luxury sedan provides a great balance
of good looks, spirited driving, and abundant tech, safety, and
convenience features at a reasonable price.
Both the A3’s exterior and interior are subtly stylish and refined -
no oversize grilles or low-rent hard plastic for this car. Front cabin
room is good, as are fit, finish, and quality of materials throughout.
The A3’s driving experience doesn’t disappoint, either, with
responsive steering and a tight suspension. Ride quality is on the firm
side, however, and although overall power is good, throttle response
is slow and the distinction between drive modes is minimal.
The A3’s powertrain is supplemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid
system, which increases power, smooths stop-start transitions, and
improves fuel economy (30 mpg in combined driving). Front-wheel
drive is standard; all-wheel drive is a $2,000 option.
Even the base Premium trim is loaded with standard safety,
tech, and convenience features: leather seating, LED headlights
with auto high beams, a fully digital instrument cluster and
infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, 3-zone climate control,
and much more.
So what does the A3 give up? Getting in and out of the
backseat is a chore, and once passengers get there, they’ll find
that headroom and legroom are tight. Rear visibility could use
improvement, too, and cabin storage cubbies are lacking.
