To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2023 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

Appearances can be deceiving. The BMW 230i, fully redesigned for 2022, seems to be a modest, unassuming compact coupe. Its kidney grille is tastefully restrained and its sheet metal is devoid of sharp creases. Only an understated spoiler and the red calipers of its optional Brembo brakes hint at its performance potential. Fundamentally, the 230i, now in its second generation, is a driver’s car, with sporty handling, strong acceleration, and a snappy throttle response. Overall, the 320i’s ride strikes a good balance between sportiness and comfort—except on rough surfaces, when road imperfections can be felt through the steering wheel and chassis. Fuel efficiency - 29 mpg in combined driving - is decent for a sports car. The 230i’s interior is nicely styled, with luxurious materials and sufficient headroom and legroom for front passengers. Visibility is good all around. The tech is up to expectations, too: adaptive LED headlights with auto high beams, multizone climate control, adjustable and easy-to-use ADAS settings, and an excellent sound system. BMW also covers routine scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles. The 230i does have a few shortcomings, however. As is the case with many coupes, getting in and out of the 230i’s backseat is difficult, and space is tight enough to discourage most adults from riding there. And oddly, the trunk has only a manual release.
