Overall Observations
The Enclave is Buick’s biggest SUV, a 3-row crossover that seats up
to 7 people. Last fully redesigned in 2018, it shares a platform with
the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. Changes for 2022 include
refreshed front and rear sheet metal, updated interior styling, and
more standard driver-assist safety features.
The Enclave is a spacious vehicle designed to ferry large numbers
of people and stuff down the road in comfort—a kind of 21stcentury
version of 1960s and ’70s “land yachts.” And the Enclave
fulfills its mission: The drivetrain provides good power plus smooth
acceleration and shifting. The cabin is a pleasant place, with nearluxury
appointments, excellent fit and finish, and plenty of storage
options. Headroom, legroom, and shoulder room are generous all
around, as is cargo space. Power folding third-row seating, with a
60/40 split, is actually suitable for 2 adults.
The Enclave is up to speed where tech is concerned as well,
equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and multiple
USB ports. Other amenities include tri-zone automatic climate
control, heated and ventilated first- and second-row seats, with a
massage feature for front-row occupants.
Not surprisingly, responsive handling and a controlled ride aren’t
the Enclave’s forte - its soft suspension fails to inspire confidence in
anything other than straight-line driving. Poor fuel economy - 20 mpg
in combined driving - is another negative, as is rear visibility.
