Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2023 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The Bolt EUV is the standard Bolt’s (slightly) larger stablemate. Introduced in 2022, it looks nearly the same as the Bolt, and its powertrain is identical. The EUV’s increased size offers some perks, one of which is more backseat legroom. Another EUV benefit, unrelated to size, is the availability of Super Cruise, GM’s partial driving automation system, which enables hands-free driving on hundreds of thousands of miles of divided highways in the U.S. and Canada. The Bolt EUV’s efficient drivetrain delivers plenty of smooth power, with good MPGe ratings and a decent range (247 miles). The ride is nicely balanced between comfort and responsiveness, and the regenerative braking setup has a good feel and can be adjusted via steering-wheel-mounted paddles. The EUV’s interior is roomy for both front and rear passengers, but the cargo area is a bit cramped. Lots of ADAS features come standard, as do heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, LED headlights with auto high beams, and wireless Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto capability. The optional 360-degree camera is useful and produces sharp pictures. By comparison, the EUV’s negatives list is small: poor rear and side visibility because of large rear pillars and high belt line, and relatively slow DC fast-charging times. All in all, the Bolt EUV - a small, practical SUV that’s enjoyable to drive - is a good value made even better by a price drop for 2023.
