Overall Observations
In every car category, some models, like the Honda Civic, achieve
legendary status. This sporty-looking compact, redesigned inside and
out for its 50th year, is offered in both sedan and 4-door hatchback
body styles.
Beneath the new, more sophisticated sheet metal and updated
interior, the Civic retains the previous generation’s powertrains. The
Sport model sedan we tested was propelled by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder
engine (158 hp), which left the car feeling underpowered despite its
lively handling. Fortunately, a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder (180
hp) is standard on the top 2 trim levels.
The passenger cabin, while spacious, may be too plain for some
people’s taste and, on lower trim levels, could benefit from betterquality
materials. Front seats offer good support, and the backseat has
plenty of room for 2 average adults. The cabin’s primary downsides
include an outdated infotainment system, high interior noise levels,
and a bumpy ride quality, especially over rough pavement.
However, the trunk offers 15 cubic feet of cargo space, which can
be expanded via the fold-down rear seatbacks. Added pluses include
Honda Sensing advanced safety features, LED headlights, excellent
EPA fuel economy, and an affordable price.
