Overall Observations
It may sport a name last seen on a Jeep in 1990, but the revivedfor-
2022 Jeep Wagoneer is a sharp-looking, modern full-size SUV
with a focus on luxury. Our test vehicle featured a V8 engine and
an 8-speed automatic, complemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid
system. (A turbocharged 6 is a $2,000 option.) Additional fuel-saving
technology includes cylinder deactivation and auto start-stop,
but EPA fuel-economy estimates are still underwhelming. Properly
equipped, the Wagoneer can tow 10,000 pounds.
Rear-wheel drive is standard, but 3 different 4-wheel-drive
systems also are available, plus an optional air suspension that
can add nearly 4 inches of ground clearance for tackling offroad
obstacles. On pavement, the powertrain provides strong
acceleration. Ride quality is generally comfortable, but the
Wagoneer’s large size results in less-than-sharp handling and longer
braking distances.
Inside, the stylish passenger cabin offers roomy accommodations
in all 3 rows, with good headroom and legroom all around. The
design and materials are top-notch, despite an overabundance of
piano-black plastic trim. Creature comforts abound, such as a fully
digital instrument cluster and intuitive infotainment system, tri-zone
climate control, multiple video screens, and power-adjustable heated
and ventilated front seats. A full suite of advanced safety features is
standard.
