Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2023 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The second-generation Lexus NX 350 compact crossover has a lot of good qualities, some of them generated by the 2022 redesign. For instance, the exterior styling, while not radically different, is noticeably sharper looking - especially the angular headlights, rear quarter panels, and taillights. The NX’s acceleration is decently quick, courtesy of a new turbocharged engine with a 40-hp bump. Handling is sportier, too, thanks to the F Sport’s sport-tuned adaptive damping suspension, which delivers a ride that’s taut but not too firm. The NX also comes standard with Lexus’ latest suite of advanced safety features, including unique items such as curve-speed management, which regulates vehicle speed on curves when adaptive cruise control is engaged. Passengers will find plenty of room front and back when they enter the cabin, which has heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are LED headlights with auto high beams. The sound quality from the optional Mark Levinson 1,800-watt, 17-speaker sound system is excellent. For 2022, Lexus replaced its frustrating touch-pad infotainment interface, but the new system, while not as clunky, is still not intuitive and awkward to use. The transmission shifter has an odd, Prius-like shift pattern, and the steering wheel buttons are overly sensitive, unexpectedly changing menu screens in the head-up display, for example. Finally, the wide rear roof pillars restrict visibility.
