Overall Observations
The Corolla Cross, new for 2022, looks a mini RAV4, which is a good
thing. All 3 trim levels have the same powertrain - a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder
engine (169 hp) paired with a CVT. Both front- and all-wheel drive (add
$1,300) are available.
The Cross’s cabin is roomy, with good front headroom and
legroom. Fuel economy is high - 32 mpg combined - and Toyota’s
strong suite of advanced safety features, LED headlights with auto high
beams, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration are
standard.
Ah, but a few possible deal breakers are present, too, like a rough
ride quality, a dated infotainment system, lots of noise from the engine
and CVT transmission, and some low-rent interior surfaces. A further
annoying thing: Unless you go for the top trim level, you can’t get
many of the features that lots of people want - like dual-zone automatic
climate control and a power driver’s seat - even as options.
But if you like the standard Corolla’s basic strengths—good overall
value, strong advanced safety features, complimentary 2 years/25,000
mile maintenance - but want more versatility, you might find happiness
with a Corolla Cross.
