Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2023 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The XC60 is Volvo’s compact luxury SUV, and the Recharge is its plug-in hybrid variant, which it gained in a 2018 redesign. The XC60’s upgraded drivetrain (455 hp) delivers quick throttle response, strong acceleration, and plenty of low-end torque; a highercapacity battery increases the XC60’s all-electric range from 19 to 35 miles. Unfortunately, the engine and drivetrain are also noisy, and charging times are slow using the 3.6-kW onboard charger. The XC60’s adaptive air suspension strikes a nice balance between comfort and responsive handling. The brakes feel solid, and regenerative braking affords the convenience of 1-pedal driving. Exterior changes for 2022 include revisions to the grille and rear bumper. The cabin is spacious, with plenty of room for passengers and interior storage, and visibility is good all around. Lots of advanced safety features come standard, including adaptive LED headlights with auto high beams. But some safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and a head-up display, require purchasing the Advance package. Overall, the XC60 feels sound and solid, as is evident when opening and closing the doors. But the interior is plain and bland, and the cloth seating material seems out of place in a luxury car. Finally, the shifter operation is quirky, and the infotainment system is not intuitive and difficult to use.
