Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The good-looking GV60 small electric crossover is Genesis’ first dedicated EV. It shares a platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6 and is available in 2 trim levels, Advanced and Performance. Both have dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setups and the same 77.4-kWh battery pack. The GV60's drivetrain produces plenty of power—483 hp for the Performance version in its 10-second boost mode. The GV60 is also engaging to drive, with a comfortable ride overall, although its firm suspension transmits some minor jolts when driving over rough patches of road. Luxurious and modern, the GV60's spacious interior is equipped with adjoining 12.3-inch instrument and infotainment screens, racing-style aluminum brake and throttle pedals, and a crystal-ball-type gear selector that flips upside down when in Park. Other novel tech includes a face-scanning system and fingerprint reader that let owners enter the car and start it without a key. A comprehensive set of ADAS features is standard on the GV60, as is an 800-volt EV architecture, which enables super-fast charging. That's a good thing, because one of the GV60's weak points is its limited EV range (235 to 248 miles). Other negatives include restricted rear visibility due to a sloping roof and a split rear window—and that sloping roofline also limits cargo space
