Overall Observations
BMW’s iconic 5 Series midsize sedan entered its eighth generation in 2024 with a complete redesign. We tested the 530i with RWD; options on our test car included the M Sport performance package and the Premium package, with comfort and convenience features.
Can one car do it all? No — but the 530i comes close. It delivers a great balance of performance, convenience, and luxury. Its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (255 hp) delivers good throttle response, quick acceleration, and strong overall power. Steering feel is good in daily driving. Handling is sporty - courtesy of the stiffer M Sport suspension - but surprisingly, ride comfort doesn’t suffer in the least. The 530i is pretty miserly with fuel, too: it’s rated at 30 mpg in combined driving.
The 530i’s spacious cabin provides good legroom and headroom front and rear, and our test car’s striking design —dark gray/off-white seating and door panels, and metallic trim on the dash — made with quality materials, is tastefully luxurious. Visibility to the front, sides, and rear is good.
Complaints are minimal. Because the HVAC controls are integrated into the infotainment touch screen, they’re somewhat distracting to use. BMW also tends to charge extra for features you might think would be standard on a car with a base price approaching $60,000, such as heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a head-up display.
