Overall Observations
Like all even-numbered BMW SUVs, the compact X2 sports a sleeker “coupe-like” profile instead of the traditional boxy shape of odd-numbered BMW SUVs. Redesigned in 2024, the X2 is offered as the xDrive 28i we tested and the more powerful M35i.
From a performance standpoint, the xDrive28i is a satisfying package. Its twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (241 hp) delivers plenty of power throughout its range and achieves commendable fuel economy as well (28 mpg overall). The steering is precise and responsive, with good feedback, the adapted M suspension deliver a smooth ride, and the brakes are strong, with a solid feel. The X2’s interior is also a high point. It’s roomy, the controls are nicely laid out, and the two-color seats and door panels on our test car provided additional flair.
The base 28i comes well equipped with a variety of convenience and advanced safety features, although many (even an auto-dimming rearview mirror!) are available only with add-on packages. Our test car had nearly $10,000 of options.
The X2 has a few shortcomings. Most annoying was the delayed engine response (a.k.a. turbo lag) that ARC staff experienced when pressing the throttle. Also, the X2’s sloping roofline and thick roof pillars made getting in and out of the back seat of the vehicle a bit awkward and significantly reduced side and rear visibility.
