Overall Observations
The midsize X5 SUV, still one of BMW’s top sellers, has been around for going on 3 decades. We tested the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, which is powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine and electric motor (483 hp total), both updated in 2024. The xDrive50e also received a bigger battery, increasing its EV-only range from 30 to 39 miles. Overall fuel efficiency, at 58 MPGe and 22 mpg, is nothing to brag about, though. All-wheel drive is standard.
The X5 accelerates quickly and delivers smooth, consistent power throughout its range. The ride is firm but comfortable, and handling is decent for a 5,600-lb vehicle—overall, the X5 feels solid and planted. And our test vehicle’s M Sport brakes provided solid stopping power.
The X5’s elegant interior provides plenty of space for 5 passengers. Quilted seating surfaces and an abundance of soft-touch materials afford an inviting setting to spend time in. A full suite of advanced safety features comes standard. And, typical for BMW, additional luxury and convenience features can be had via optional packages (our test vehicle had some $14,000 in add-ons).
Nits to pick: The infotainment system’s multilayered menu is distracting (the HVAC controls are controlled by the touch screen, for example). And numerous features you might expect to be standard on a car with a $72,500 base price (head-up display, front and rear heated seats) are extra-cost options.
