Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The midsize X5 SUV, still one of BMW’s top sellers, has been around for going on 3 decades. We tested the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, which is powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine and electric motor (483 hp total), both updated in 2024. The xDrive50e also received a bigger battery, increasing its EV-only range from 30 to 39 miles. Overall fuel efficiency, at 58 MPGe and 22 mpg, is nothing to brag about, though. All-wheel drive is standard. The X5 accelerates quickly and delivers smooth, consistent power throughout its range. The ride is firm but comfortable, and handling is decent for a 5,600-lb vehicle—overall, the X5 feels solid and planted. And our test vehicle’s M Sport brakes provided solid stopping power. The X5’s elegant interior provides plenty of space for 5 passengers. Quilted seating surfaces and an abundance of soft-touch materials afford an inviting setting to spend time in. A full suite of advanced safety features comes standard. And, typical for BMW, additional luxury and convenience features can be had via optional packages (our test vehicle had some $14,000 in add-ons). Nits to pick: The infotainment system’s multilayered menu is distracting (the HVAC controls are controlled by the touch screen, for example). And numerous features you might expect to be standard on a car with a $72,500 base price (head-up display, front and rear heated seats) are extra-cost options.
