Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

New in 2022, the i4 Gran Coupe EV is the automaker’s least expensive EV. Nearly identical in design and features to the gas-powered 4 Series Gran Coupe, the i4 provides a nice balance of performance and luxury, with just a few drawbacks. For starters, the i4 is a stylish, sharp-looking vehicle. We tested the base model eDrive35, which has a single rear-mounted electric motor (282 hp) that provides an abundance of power and torque. Braking is smooth, with plenty of stopping capacity. Steering and handling, while not razor sharp, are sufficiently engaging for everyday driving. Ride quality is on the firm side but comfortable, thanks to adaptive suspension damping. A full range of advanced safety features comes standard. BMWs are noted for well-designed, upscale interiors, and the i4 continues the tradition. Headroom and legroom up front are good, but space in the back is a bit tight. Also, the sloping roofline limits headroom and makes getting in and out of the car a bit awkward. A few negatives worth noting: At just 252 miles, the range is disappointing for a car with an MSRP in the mid-$60K range. Also, the infotainment system is fairly complicated and controlled mostly by touch-screen inputs rather than physical knobs. Finally, the small rear window limits visibility.
