Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The much-anticipated Lyriq 2-row midsize SUV, introduced in 2023, is Cadillac’s first EV. It’s available in single-motor RWD (340 hp) and dual-motor AWD (500 hp) versions. We tested a dual-motor top-tier Luxury 3 model with a 307-mile range. The Lyriq is designed to appeal to Cadillac’s traditional customer base and new buyers alike. It’s an impressive-looking car, and it delivers good acceleration, plenty of power, and competent handling. It also fulfills Cadillac’s traditional mission: providing passengers with a supremely comfortable ride, plenty of comfort and convenience features, and sumptuous surroundings. The Lyriq’s spacious cabin is luxurious in understated way; our test car had gray leather seating with contrasting white stitching, ambient lighting, and aluminum and open-pore wood trim on the door panels. An attractive curved 33.0-inch LED touch screen comprises the instrument cluster and infotainment system. There’s enough legroom and headroom for all passengers. DC fast charging and a full set of advanced safety features, including GM’s Super Cruise system, are standard. The Lyriq’s downsides include HVAC controls that can be distracting because they’re a part of the infotainment system; finicky steering-wheel buttons that don’t always respond to the driver’s touch; and distracting massaging seat controls that require manipulating a knob on the driver’s door while paying attention to the touch screen. Finally, the rear roof pillars and sloping roofline restrict rear visibility.
