Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

Introduced in 2024, the Blazer EV is Chevy’s first venture into midsize electric SUV territory. Completely unrelated to the gasoline-powered Blazer, the Blazer EV is available in two trim levels with 1 or 2 electric motors (RWD or AWD). We tested the top-trim dual-motor RS (288 hp). The Blazer EV is a versatile vehicle with a number of strong points, not the least of which is its sporty good looks inside and out (our test car’s bright-red sheet metal was matched by its eye-popping red-and-black interior). Another plus is the Blazer EV’s drivability: It delivers a smooth, quiet, comfortable ride, with a responsive throttle, abundant power, and an EPA-estimated 279 miles of range. The Blazer EV’s interior boasts plenty of room for all passengers. A massive, 17.7-inch touch screen with clear, high-quality graphics dominates the dash. Other safety and convenience items on our test car included enhanced ADAS features, 21-inch wheels, a power liftgate, and heated and ventilated front seats. Oddly, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t supported on the Blazer EV, although they are supported on gas-powered versions. Other Blazer EV negatives include relatively low DC fast-charging capability (150 kW) and impeded rear visibility due to a sloping roofline, large roof pillars, and a small back window. Finally, the absence of a physical stop-start switch may frustrate drivers who prefer traditional controls.
