Overall Observations
New for 2024, the Equinox EV is an attractive compact electric SUV that’s unrelated to the gas-powered Equinox except for its name. Available in 5 trim levels, it can be equipped with single (213 hp) or dual electric motors (288 hp). We tested the low-end 2LT trim with a dual-motor, AWD setup.
The Equinox EV has much to recommend it and few flaws. A leading virtue is its extensive range: up to 319 miles for a single-motor version, quite good for an EV with a starting price of about $43,000. (Our dual-motor test vehicle is rated 285 miles.)
The 2LT also has a welcoming interior: plenty of room, easy entry and exit from the front doors, and comfy front seats. The ride is comfortable and the steering is fine for everyday driving. Standard features include a digital instrument cluster, 17.7-inch center touch screen, and a 6-speaker audio system. To this the 2LT trim adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, hands-free liftgate, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, synthetic leather upholstery, heated steering wheel and front seats, and more. A full set of advanced driver aids is standard.
On to the 2 LT’s flaws. Unlike the gas-powered Equinox, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are unavailable. At 150-kW, its fast-charging capability is relatively slow. Finally, rear and side visibility is hindered by large roof supports and a small rear window.
