Overall Observations
The Dodge Hornet is a small SUV based on the Alfa Romeo Tonale platform. (Both brands are owned by international automaker Stellantis.) The stylish Hornet looks quick, and in this case, looks aren’t deceiving. The 2 top trim levels (R/T and R/T Plus) have a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with 288 hp and up to 33 miles of all-electric driving.
Dodge outfits the Hornet with lots of standard equipment, such as automatic headlights/high beams, dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen. AWD is standard on all Hornets.
The Hornet comes with a full suite of standard ADAS features, and the optional Tech Pack ($2,245) on our test car added 5 more, including active driving assist, intelligent speed assist, and a surround-view camera system. In addition, the performance-oriented Track Pack ($2,595) added 20-inch wheels, synthetic suede upholstery, and adjustable suspension dampers.
The Hornet’s fuel economy is decent (77 MPGe and 29 mpg in combined driving), but the Hornet’s soft, unengaging steering undermines its sporting aspirations. Interior fit and finish is good, but some of the materials feel cheap and could use an upgrade. Other negatives include rear visibility limited by the back-seat headrests plus somewhat difficult back-seat entry and exit due to the Hornet’s sloping roofline.
